I belong to a highly professional, educated, and religious family, which was deeply involved in the nation’s freedom struggle.
It has been a honour and privilege to have been educated in the best institutions of India and overseas. To me as an Indian, it was a matter of great pride and profuse professional satisfaction to establish an international standard Paediatric Nephrology Centre in Delhi.
I am also fortunate to be practising medicine in an era where spectacular advances are being made in genetic, bio-chemistry, imaging techniques, and revolutionised clinical-laboratory medicine.
I have been taught to become a skilled physician by combining judicious medical knowledge, intuition, judgement, and latest treatment modalities with a sound scientific evidence based delivery systems.
No greater opportunity, responsibility or obligation can fall to the lot of a human being, than to become a physician. In the care of suffering he needs technical skills, scientific knowledge and human understanding. He who uses these with courage, humility and wisdom will provide a unique service for his fellow men, and will build an enduring edifice of character within himself. A physician should ask of his destiny, no more than this and be content with no less. Tact, sympathy and understanding are expected of the physician, for patients are no mere collection of symptoms and damaged organs. He is a human; fearful, hopeful, seeking help-relief-reassurance.
In this face of profound explosive changes in technology, I realise that, yet, skill is the most sophisticated application for patient care. In this age of being proactive it is crucial to be judicially conservative at times. Medicine is an art and science, where I have to continuously update myself, for it is imperative to be a perpetual student.
I have tried to exemplify the highest values a being a caring and compassionate physician to treat the body and mind of the child. I have tried to have illimitable freedom of the human mind, where I am not afraid to follow the truth, where ever it may lead me; nor to tolerate any error, so long as reason is left free to combat it.
Attitude to me is more important than facts, money, appearance, success, failure or circumstances. It is more important than what people say, do, or think. It can make or break any situation or institution. The remarkable think is that I have a choice everyday regarding what attitude I will embrace. I can’t change the past, but can learn from to it. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it. Dr. Sanjeev Bagai is one of best Paediatric Consultant in Delhi India.
